Currently enrolled UM students can use UHS
Who are "currently enrolled UM students"? This
means students who are currently taking regular classes on the Ann
Arbor campus.
Students who are between semesters (e.g. during semester breaks and over the summer if students are not enrolled) and students
on the UM-Flint or UM-Dearborn campuses are NOT considered currently enrolled UM students.

What is the health service fee? Students pay a health
service fee as part of tuition. This fee covers most services at UHS. Therefore students have few expenses at UHS.
What is covered by the health service
fee? Students pay no additional fees for:
- Clinic visits (e.g. medical clinics, gynecology, specialty clinics,
nurse visits, etc.)
- Eye care for medical problems (does not include routine eye exams, glasses, contact lenses)
- Health education
- Nutrition counseling
- Physical therapy
- Radiology
- Most laboratory tests
- Advice by telephone
What is NOT covered by the health service fee? Students must pay
additional fees for :
- Allergy antigens
- Durable medical equipment and supplies for home use
- Immunizations (vaccinations)
- Medications (prescription and non-prescription)
- Routine eye exams, glasses and contact lenses
- Tuberculosis skin tests (unless part of
International Mandatory Tuberculosis Screening)
- Certain laboratory tests including genetic testing, antibody titers that are not medically necessary, tests required solely
for administrative purposes (e.g. employment, fellowship, immigration) and tests that are not related to active health problems
- Services received between terms (students may wish to consider the
UHS Prepaid Plan for coverage between terms)
Note: The health service fee does not pay for, or reduce costs
for, services outside UHS. Students are responsible for all health
care costs incurred outside of UHS, including at UM Health System
(hospitals and clinics). Students need health insurance
to cover costs for services outside UHS.

Will the health service fee cover services at UHS before the term begins
(or after it ends)? The health service fee covers services at UHS for approximately one week before
and two weeks after the term. These times are called grace periods. Grace periods vary by
school, so please contact UHS Business Office at 734-764-7380 for specific dates for your school.
Do students need health insurance? Students
should have health insurance to cover medical care received outside
of UHS (for example, emergency room visits, hospitalizations or
ambulance service). These are not covered by the health service
fee. Fees for these services are the patient's responsibility.
In addition, UHS may bill insurance companies for items not covered by the health service fee,
during periods when students are not currently enrolled, and when students do not use the
UHS Prepaid Plan.
Students covered under managed care (HMO) insurance programs can
receive services at UHS without a referral from their primary care
physician for services covered under the health service fee.
International students and their families are required to have health insurance.

insurance coverage, or those in need of supplemental insurance, can purchase the
