Tuition Refund Insurance Committee (TRIC)

On this page:

Mission: To serve as representatives for the students of the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor and Dearborn campuses, providing ongoing oversight for an affordable, yet adequate tuition refund insurance plan.

Insurance plan design:

The Insurance plan design should:

  • Be an elective insurance plan, which provides coverage for tuition and mandatory fees as well as University housing (room and board) costs if a medical or mental health withdrawal occurs
  • Significantly extend and enhance the University's published withdrawal policy
  • Provide funds that can help to pay back loans, grants, scholarships and out-of-pocket expenses

Committee responsibilities:

Review, recommend, evaluate, and work with University Procurement Services to determine vendor and complete the contracting process

Review the performance of the plan on an annual basis and make plan and program modifications

Be responsive to input and feedback from clients (students and UM community members) and incorporate their needs into future contracts when possible

During bid years (approximately every 5 years), host a presentation allowing students and TRIC members to ask questions and give direct feedback to the proposed insurance carrier

Recognize the diverse composition of the University community and make recommendations which reflect this diversity to vendors

Take an active role in supporting future insurance planning for the University student community

Oversee TRIC webpage

Oversee communications and clarify information relative to insurance to constituents for support and feedback

Enhance communication and feedback on the student’s tuition refund insurance needs, educate a broader base of students on the importance and availability of tuition refund insurance

Create a network of student support for tuition refund insurance
