| How
to test at UHS We make testing easy,
quick and free (or cheap). See Three ways to test
or call 734-763-6969 for recorded information.
HIV testing is free for enrolled students and Prepaid Plan members
($20 for others).
Blood tests results are available in 1 week.
We offer an oral test -- no needles! A sample of "oral mucosal
transudate" (not saliva) is collected via a cheek swab and
tested for HIV antibodies. This test is as accurate as a blood test.
Results are available in 2 weeks.
Note: UHS provides STD assessment
and HIV antibody testing separately. Please allow at least
30 minutes for HIV testing.
Three
ways to test
1. Make an appointment up to one week in advance.
Call 734-764-8325 or 734-647-9717 (TTY for the hearing or speech
impaired) or stop by Appointment Scheduling, second floor of UHS.
2. Walk-in (not available May-August) to Health
Promotion and Community Relations (second floor, room 2110) 1-3
PM weekdays. No appointment is necessary. Walk-in testers will
be seen in order of arrival. Availability is limited. Walk-in
testing is available only September through April.
3. Home testing kits are available for purchase
in the Pharmacy. You may prefer home testing because it can be
done in the privacy of your home. Results are available in one
week by contacting the company via telephone. For more information,
call the Pharmacy at 734-764-7387.

When
to test For most people, we recommend that you test 3-6 months after your last possible exposure
(for example unprotected sex). If you test earlier, you may need to repeat the test. You can talk to a UHS HIV test counselor
about your personal situation.
Why
test? Take the test if you have been exposed to another person's blood, semen, vaginal fluids or
breast milk, for example through unprotected sex (vaginal, anal or oral) or sharing injection drug equipment.
Benefits of testing include:
- Reduced anxiety about your health
- Information about risk, safer sex, etc.
- Earlier medical care if you are infected
Test
results
- Negative means no HIV antibodies found, either because you
have not been infected with HIV, or you have not yet developed
antibodies. (Antibodies develop within six months after infection.)
- Positive means HIV antibodies were found. HIV is present and
you are able to infect others. It does not necessarily mean that
you have symptoms.
- Indeterminate means that the test result is unclear and should
be repeated.
