Insurance For Students
On this page
Why students need health insurance
Health insurance is not required to receive care at UHS.
Many UHS services are covered by the health service fee when a student
is enrolled for classes for the current semester on the Ann Arbor
campus. See Who Can Use UHS? for information
about coverage through the health service fee.
Students should have health insurance in order to cover medical
care received outside of UHS (for example medication, emergency
room visits, hospitalizations or ambulance service). These are not
covered by the health service fee. Fees for these services are the
patient's responsibility.
UHS may bill insurance companies for services not covered
by the health service fee. Students should have their medical insurance
card available when visiting UHS. See Billable
Health Insurances for more information.
An important suggestion: If you do not have insurance, consider
purchasing the Domestic Student Health Insurance Plan.
International students are required to purchase insurance that
meets University standards, such as the UM
International Student/Scholar Health Insurance Plan. International
students with other health insurance must check with the International
Center Health Insurance Office at 734-647-2303 or email international-insurance@umich.edu
to make sure the policy meets University standards.
Insurance plans for students
Other health insurance Many
students are covered by other health insurance plans outside the
University (for example, through a parent's insurance plan).
Please consider these important suggestions:
- Contact your insurance company to learn about your coverage.
If your plan is an HMO or POS, your coverage may require a referral.
- Get your own health insurance card (or a copy of both sides)
and carry it with you along with the following insurance information:
- name of the insurance company
- address and phone number of the insurance company
- name of the primary subscriber to the policy
- policy numbers
- contract number
Alumni also
need health insurance. See For Alumni,
which links to Assurant Health for short-term health insurance.
