What is UHS? University Health Service (UHS) is your campus health
resource, where you can receive a wide variety of services, all in one building on central campus. For more
information, see What is UHS?.
What is the health service fee and what
does it cover? Each semester, students who are enrolled
for classes pay a health service fee as part of tuition. The health
service fee covers most services at UHS. For coverage and exclusions, see
Who can use UHS?.
Do students need health insurance? Domestic students should have health
insurance and international students and their families are required to have health insurance.
Health insurance may help to cover:
- Products and services not covered by the health service fee
(for example: medication, immunizations, orthopedic equipment, and routine
eye care)
- Health care received outside of UHS (for example, emergency room visits, hospitalizations or
ambulance service)
- Health care for dependents

Why does UHS need my health insurance
information? UHS may bill insurance companies for services
not covered by the health service fee. Insurance information changes
and authorizations expire. Therefore, we need to ask for the information.
What if my insurance company does
not pay for a UHS visit? Your health service fee is designed
to minimize your out-of-pocket expenses for health care at UHS.
Most services provided at UHS will be covered by the health service
fee.
Will I get a bill for items not covered by the health service fee? All patients
are expected to pay at the time of service.
Will my parents receive any bills
for UHS services? Generally, no. However, charges for services
not covered by the health service fee that are billed to your insurance
company may appear on your insurance statement.
If your parent is the policyholder of the insurance, it is possible
that the insurance company will notify them of the billings received
or paid.
Also, if your UM student account is paid by your parents and you
choose to have any UHS services billed to this account, be aware
that the UHS charge will be identified on your financial statement.
The UHS charge will simply indicate that you were seen at UHS and
not state the purpose of the visit. For more information, see Confidentiality
at UHS.

How will my UHS visit affect my insurance
deductible? If you are an enrolled student receiving services
covered by the health service fee and UHS has no reason to bill
your insurance company (such as for a prescription, etc.), your
deductible will not be affected.
What if I don't have my insurance card with me at a UHS visit?
It is important to carry an insurance card (or a photocopy) with you at all times. If you don't have it with
you at your visit, please return to UHS 3-10 days after your visit and provide a photocopy of the front and
back of the card to the UHS Business Office. When we have your signature on file, your insurance information
can be mailed or phoned to UHS.
Does UM offer a health insurance plan? Yes, UM offers the following
plans for students (in addition to plans offered to University employees).
- Domestic Student Health Insurance Plan is designed to cover
costs associated with emergencies, is competitively priced and endorsed by the Michigan Student
Assembly (MSA). Information is mailed to students each August.
- UM International Student/Scholar Health Insurance
Plan is designed to cover costs associated with emergencies and is competitively priced.
- GradCare is available to graduate students in sponsored
groups and some Graduate Student Instructors or Graduate Student Research Assistants. Check with your
academic department for eligibility.
- UHS Prepaid Plan is not an insurance plan but it does
cover some UHS services when students are not currently enrolled for classes.
Alumni also have insurance options. See For Alumni.
As a student, what do I need to know about using my health
insurance? Learn about coverage and how to use insurance, if needed. Some insurance covers
only emergency services while away from home.
Ask how billing works; you may be required to pay for services and seek reimbursement from
your insurance company.
Check whether and when you need a referral from your primary care provider.
Be aware that you are responsible for payment of deductibles, co-payments, co-insurance amounts as well as
non-covered services. Before you accept services, check with
your insurance company about coverage.
Carry your own health insurance card (or a copy of both sides of
a card) with name of insurance company, policy/contract numbers,
name of primary subscriber and contact information.

Do I need a referral (written consultation request) from my home
primary care provider (PCP) to use UHS? No, when you are a currently enrolled student, you can use UHS
without a referral from your home PCP and your health service fee will cover most services.
Also note:
- Some services that are not covered by the health service fee (at UHS and outside UHS) may be covered
by insurance if you have a referral from your home PCP. UHS can help coordinate a referral if necessary.
- If you have Premier Care or GradCare, you can choose UHS
as your primary care site. For currently enrolled students, co-payments
for UHS visits are waived.
What types of insurance does UHS accept? See
Billable Health Insurances.
Does the UHS Pharmacy accept insurance? Yes,
see Pharmacy for
accepted prescription drug plans. Some prescription plans cover
the full cost, while others require deductibles or co-payment. Please
check with your insurance company for how to use your insurance
at the UHS Pharmacy, or call the Pharmacy at 734-764-7387.
What methods of payment do you accept? See
Payment.
What is the difference between the UHS and University of
Michigan Health System (UMHS)? UHS and UMHS (hospitals, emergency room and clinics) are
seperate medical facilities, with different services and billing practices.
UHS is students' campus health resource and is located on central
campus. UHS can meet most students' basic health care needs, and
if needed, UHS can help coordinate care at UMHS. However, students'
health service fee does not cover services received at UMHS hospitals
and clinics. For more information, see UM
Health System.
Where can I get dental insurance?
The M-DENT Dental Plan is offered by the University of Michigan
School of Dentistry for UM students and detached visiting scholars.
