Where to learn about contraception:

  • NEW -- Watch an online video: When considering contraception, you are encouraged to watch this video before seeing a clinician. You will need to log on using your UM uniqname and Kerberos password. If you don't have a UM uniqname and password, you can create a free "Friend Account".
  • Choosing a Birth Control Method is an interactive program to help you select a method, from the American Reproductive Health Professionals.
  • "Contraceptive Options" brochure describes effectiveness and considerations for methods (available from UHS Health Promotion and Community Relations, room 2110).
  • Read about Intrauterine Devices (IUD, PDF).
  • Clinicians can discuss contraceptive options. Make an appointment by calling 734-764-8325. When scheduling, please briefly explain your interest so that the scheduler can allot enough time for your visit.
  • Free condoms are available in UHS Health Promotion and Community Relations (room 2110).
  • Discounted products such as condoms, vaginal film and lubricants are available at the UHS Pharmacy (discount coupons are available in the Pharmacy and in UHS Health Promotion and Community Relations, room 2110).


How to get the pill:

  • Oral contraceptive pills (also called birth control pills) are available by prescription only.
  • Visit a clinician to get a prescription. The clinician may recommend a routine gynecological exam, which may include a pelvic exam and possibly a Pap smear and discusses oral contraceptive pills before prescribing them.
  • If you want an exam druing your visit, schedule your appointment for when you are not menstruating or when your menstrual flow is very light.
  • Cost for most pills at the UHS Pharmacy ranges $24-50 per pack (subject to change).

Confidentiality:

  • Services at UHS are confidential.
  • Sensitive services such as contraception-related visits and testing for sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy are not billed to a student's insurance while the student is currently enrolled.
